The Five Best Working Directors

This time on ReelTime’s web blog movie reviews.. we have, DIRECTORS, yep, my top five.

Hey folks, I wanted to contribute to the growing internet trend of listicles, by making a list of my favorite movie directors! Those who have inspired, entertained, and made Joey Knows the moviefan he is today! In descending order of importance, they are…

5. Joe Dante.
Director of Gremlins and Small Soldiers, which would be ’nuff said, but he ALSO made Explorers and The ‘burbs!!! Guy’s a genius!

4. Kathryn Bigelow. K-19: The Widowmaker is one of the most underrated movies of all time. Plus you won’t believe the performance she got out of Ron Silver in Blue Steel! When he lifts those weights! Yikes!!!

3. Jag Mundhra.
I admit this one is very personal, but the work of Jag Mundhra, especially Tainted Love, has changed my perspective on what movies can be. It’s not all comic book heroes and comedies. Movies can be very, very erotic!

(tie) 2. Uwe Boll/M. Night Shyamalan. Okay, okay, now I know Uwe gets alota criticism from people, but his movies are SO memorable, first of all, and, futhermore the guy is a master of promotion. Shyamalann, with Lady in the Water is ’nuff said, The Happening was great as well, and he really might be the Next Spielberg.

1. Lawrence Kasdan.
While Spielberg is important to many, Scorsese I have also heard (I loved Shine a Light) for Joey, it’s Kasdan. He’s made serious adult movies like Body Heat, and Return of the Jedi. He’s a sci-fi master with Dreamcatcher, and he’s planning the Clash of the Tians remake, which if it’s anything like the first is just going to be Triple A Amazing! And don’t forget he also did my favorite romantic comedy The Bodyguard! (Well, he just wrote it, but c’mon!)

Movie Review at ReelTime:The Happening

This week at ReelTime movie reviews, The Happening

This weekend I saw M. Night Shamalyan’s The Happening! True, The Incredible Hulk came out, and also true I love, love, love, love computer animated movies, but c’mon, guys, this was the guy who gave us Lady in the Water! I had to see it! So after Twins of Glimmer practice with Renald, (where I did an extended-extended version of Emotional Rescue, which we will probably include on our upcoming CD, FYI.) we went over to the theater.

And I was not disappointed! I should warn you that is a very strange movie. Even stranger than Lady in the Water! But wow it packs a punch! I’m not really even sure what it’s about – something causes people to start killing themselves in big cities in the Northeast. There are lots of theories, but no one knows why. And then it stops, just as mysteriously as it started.

Much like The Birds, there is no explanation for the “act of nature.” It just happens. The Happening, get it? It reminded me of the time my cousin Andrew fell from his roof trying to get his Frisbee. He fell and hit the fence around his house. If he would have hit the ground, he would have died, but the way he hit the fence, he just got cut really bad. It also makes me think of that movie Magnolia, which wasn’t a fave because it was so darn long, but they talk about how strange things happen all the time. And that is so true!

The only thing I would have changed is that I would have had Zooey Deschanel singing at the end, because she is a good singer.

Hey, if you didn’t notice it’s summer, again!!! And it’s darn hot! I am going to go get an Otter Pop and chill inside. I’m thinking The Quick and the Dead (same director as Spiderman, natch!) CYAZ!!!

They might look bored but they are scared out of their minds.
